How does Express entry work?

Express entry is an online system. There are 3 immigration programs managed through Express Entry:

Federal Skilled Worker Program Federal Skilled Trades Program Canadian Experience Class
  • for skilled workers with foreign work experience
  • must meet criteria for education and other factors
  • for skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade
  • must have a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification
  • for skilled workers who have Canadian work experience
  • work experience must have been gained in the 3 years before you apply

Step 1-: Filling Online Express entry Portal

Applicants can fill out the online express entry form. Applicants are assessed on the basis of their Age, marital status, work history, educational qualification, language proficiency, however, they will be asked to answer questions based on these factors.

Applicants who effectively meet the measures of at least one of the federal economic immigration programs under Express Entry will then, at that point, be arranged into a pool of qualified people. These applicants will be positioned by their possibilities of financial and economic achievement and the highest-ranking candidates, along with those who have qualifying offers of employment or provincial/territorial nominations, will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

Step 2: IRCC will issue you ITA

Highest ranked candidate will receive an ITA and substantially will be asked to submit the application. You will have two options once you receive an ITA either to decline the invitation or accept the invitation.

Accept the Invitation- If you accept the invitation you will have to submit all your documents like Birth certificate, Marriage certificates, Educational Documents, ECA, Language test scorecard, Past work experience letters, Police clearance certificates (all the countries you have stayed in for more than 6 months), Job offer if you have from any Canadian employer, Proof of relationship if you have close relative in Canada who is PR or Canadian Citizen. Make sure documents which you are providing at this stage are similar to the information provided by you in your profile before you received your ITA. Any incorrect, misleading information or document would lead to misrepresentation and you will be banned from applying under Canada’s immigration program for next 5 years.

Decline the Invitation:- You can choose to decline the invitation if you no longer want to move to Canada.

Step 3: After you apply

You will be contacted through the online portal as well as email address you used while submitting your profile for any further updates for instance request to get your biometrics, if required to ask for more documents, set up a meeting if necessary and to update you on what is the next step. Primarily decision on the application is based on your eligibility criteria for the program and your admissibility based on the results of medical exam, police certificates and background checks

IRCC will verify your information If you are not truthful in your Express Entry profile or application for permanent residence, they may refuse your application, find you inadmissible or bar you from applying to come to Canada for any reason for 5 years. If your application is rejected, to be considered in future rounds of invitation you will have to submit new express entry profile, meet the eligibility criteria and be accepted in the pool again.

If your application is approved you will receive COPR or a permanent resident visa (if you’re from a country that requires a visa) through mail. Your COPR will have information about who you are, as well as your photograph, it is imperative to check and make sure your information is correct. Your COPR should have the same information as the information on your passport. If there is a mistake on your COPR, contact IRCC through your account.

Please note: You cannot extend your COPR, so make sure to use it before it expires.

What is the CRS score?

The CRS is a points-based system that assess and score your profile and rank it in the Express Entry pool.

Express entry oversees three programs

  • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  • Federal Skilled Trade (FST)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Any individual who submits a profile to the Express Entry pool is assigned CRS score out of 1200 . Roughly after every two weeks, the Canadian government leads an Express Entry draw, where they issue a series of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Permanent residence to the highest- ranking candidates. CRS points are assigned on the basis of four factors-:

-Core / human capital factors
-Spouse or common-law partner factors
-Skill Transferability factors
-Additional points

How can I increase my CRS score?

1.  Improve your Language Test score.

Improving language score is the easiest and convenient method for increasing the CRS score. Good Language test score can all alone help you get up to 160 points. In any case, good language score and post-auxiliary schooling can get you an additional 50 extra points.
Applicant need to score Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 to be qualified for Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker program. Which is equivalent to 7 on each language ability on the CELPIP and 6 on each language ability on the IELTS. Ostensibly, scoring CLB 9 in all language abilities could definitely help in increasing the overall CRS score.

2.   Look for employer in Canada

Having a job offer from employer can help you score extra 50 points. You can look for a potential employers on websites like Job bank , Indeed and can also apply directly on the company’s websites.

3.      Provincial Nomination

Receiving provincial nomination can help in getting 600 additional points. Many provincial nomination program are lined up with Express Entry, however it’s normally dependent upon the applicant to sort out which programs they may be qualified for and how to apply. Remember that applying for a provincial nomination is normally a totally different application process.

4.      Educational Qualification

Another  efficient way to increase the score is by upgrading the educational qualification. Considering going back to school and acquiring higher education like master’s degree or doctorate degree can help in increasing the CRS score. Apparently, acquiring new abilities or finishing instructive program not just offers you the chance to build your CRS score yet in addition, it is a significant and important part of the skill transferability factor of the Comprehensive Ranking System.

5.      Work experience

Although you just need one year of work experience to qualify to apply for PR under Express entry. However, accumulating more  work experience can help in increasing the CRS score. Express Entry utilizes the National Occupational Classification (NOC) framework to assign points to all occupations. Picking the right NOC code is probably the least complex method for increasing your score. You’ll need to prove that whatever NOC codes you claim in your work experience are accurate if you receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence, so you should not misrepresent your experience, as misrepresentation can ban you to apply under any program for 5 years .

Note: You can check your CRS score on canada.ca Click Here

CRS score only gives you the tentative idea of your score, eventually once you submit your application under Express entry IRCC awards you the point within 24 hours which could sometimes be different from the score calculated on the website. So, you can use this tool as a benchmark rather than completely relying on it.
